This year is almost at its end; it has been challenging but also full of opportunities. We at STEP Project, thanks to our Affiliates, which support us across countries, have been exploring and exploiting different paths which have led us to a stronger position. The latest STEP Project-KPMG Private Enterprise Global Family Business Survey has successfully been completed and the new global report will be released in the first half of 2022; the first STEP Project Research Think Tank was a great opportunity to exchange research and present papers based on STEP Project data with a great keynote speech by prof. Shaker Zahra. This newsletter provides you with the latest update. I wish you a peaceful holidays season and give you appointment in 2022 for another exciting year with the STEP Project.




Global Family Business Survey (2021-2022)

The STEP Project Global Consortium and KPMG Private Enterprise joined forces to develop the Global Family Business Survey (2021-2022). The report is expected to be launched in May 2022. 

Middle East & Africa Report

 Read the latest report to learn how Middle Eastern and African family firms reacted to the shock of the COVID-19 pandemic. This report is dedicated to exploring how Middle Eastern and African family firms have implemented different models of resilience to withstand the COVID-19 pandemic.

The STEP Project -UVM team is led by Professor  Promodita Sharma, who is a Professor and Schlesinger Grossman Chair of Family Enterprise, and the former editor of the Family Business Review and co-founder of the FERC Conference.

S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research

We are pleased to welcome our new affiliate  S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR), from India, recognized as one of the top 50 business schools according to the 2021 Financial Times Masters in Management global rankings. 

The STEP Project-SPJIMR team is led by Professor Tulsi Jayakumar, who is a professor of Economics and Chairperson of Family Managed Business at SPJIMR.


The STEP Project Global Consortium hosted its first Research Think-Tank virtually for the STEP Project Affiliates on December 06, 2021, we invited Professor Shaker Zahra as the external keynote speaker who shared his insights on family business research. Our affiliate members presented their working papers and received feedback from external discussants. 
The third installment of the STEP Conversation Series took place on September 02, 2021. The topic of discussion was the role of sustainability in family businesses highlighted by our esteemed keynote speaker, scholar Pramodita Sharma. 


The STEP Project Affiliate members and scholars Jeremy Cheng, Luis Diaz-Matajira, Nupur Pavan Bang, Rodrigo Basco, Andrea CalabrĂ², Albert James, and Georges Samara have edited the book Family Business Case Studies Across the World: Succession and Governance in a Disruptive Era, which is expected to be available online by September 2022. Jeremy Cheng, a member of the STEP-CUHK Team has been awarded the FFI (Family First Institute) Barbara Hollander award to recognize his interest and research in the family business field. Click here to learn more
